What I do I’m comfortable with a wide range of groups, both large and small. I’m a former kindergarten teacher, and I’ve taught creative writing at the high school and college level. I am a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators. In general, my presentations last 45 minutes to 1 hour and work best for grades six and up. A typical full-day visit may include 3 sessions (large or small). I enjoy meeting with interested students in an informal setting, and book signings are always a lot of fun. (Schools are responsible for having books available or selling them beforehand.) I’m happy to work with you to plan a program that will work best for your group. Sample presentations: * Are these stories true: How I turn real life into fiction (Note: my stories are not true. Not exactly.) * How I learned to write like a girl: Finding my characters’ voices * Roadside Research: Finding story ideas with maps, facts, dictionaries and rest stops I live about 25 miles west of New Jersey and 50 miles north of Philadelphia in the lovely, historic and folkloric town of Quakertown, PA. For school visits, my fee is generally $150/session plus travel and lodging. A visit might include just one session with a class or perhaps 4 different classroom programs plus lunch with students depending on your schedule and interests. Library visits and other events are negotiable. Important note: Reading an author’s work before the day of a visit is an absolute requirement. Otherwise, the writer can’t offer much more that what students might get from a good PBS video or a talented substitute teacher. Please make books available to your students before the day of the visit. |
